Integrus Will Lead High School Design Process
Vashon Island School District, with the help of an advisory committee of Island educators, architects and public servants, has chosen Integrus Architecture to design the remodel of Vashon Island High School (VHS) and renovate other district facilities. The selection process began with seven firms and ended with Integrus as the final choice.
Phase 1 of the master plan —estimated to cost $47.7 million— will go to voters for approval in November 2010.
Over the next three months, Integrus will work with VISD staff, as well as community members, to develop a set of educational specifications to support the district’s vision for academic and extracurricular programs as articulated in the strategic plan.
This process helps ensure that the plans for the renovation and modernization of the high school will:
• Enhance learning
• Support teaching,
• Provide spaces for a wide range of community activities
• Improve operational efficiencies.
Developing the education specifications before, as opposed to after, the bond goes to voters, will allow the district to begin construction as early as June of 2012 and conclude in 2014. The early construction start is estimated to save approximately $1.6 million in anticipated construction cost escalation. Phase 1 of the master plan will include:
• A new classroom building at Vashon Island High School (VHS);
• Renovations to VHS Building A, which currently houses the library, theater, cafeteria, school administration offices, and classrooms;
• Renovations to McMurray, Chautauqua and the district office;
The school board is also committed to proposing Phase II of the master plan , which would include a renovation to the high-school gym, in three to five years. Click here for a
timelineof the process from March through November 2010.
